The Ottawa Senators might need a boost to help end their current rough stretch. The return of Jason Spezza(notes) could be it.

The Senators might have their star center back as they try to avoid a third consecutive loss Thursday night against the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning.

After missing Ottawa’s past two games due to back pain, there’s a chance Spezza could return as the Senators (6-4-2) face Tampa Bay for the third time this season.

Spezza took part in a full practice Wednesday, but his status will likely be a game-time decision.

Montreal Canadiens at Boston Bruins

As the top seed in the Eastern Conference, the Boston Bruins quickly escorted the Montreal Canadiens out of the playoffs last spring, but the banged-up Bruins look like a different team in the midst of a major offensive drought.

The Canadiens, meanwhile, are having trouble stopping the puck going into the archrivals’ first meeting of the season, and these struggling clubs will try to sort out their issues as they face off Thursday night at the TD Garden.

Little went wrong for Boston during a dominating regular-season run in 2008-09, but the Bruins (6-7-1) have been derailed by a punchless offense that is playing without injured top-line forwards Marc Savard(notes) and Milan Lucic(notes). They also lost leading goal scorer Phil Kessel(notes) to Toronto in the offseason.

Boston hasn’t scored in more than 130 minutes after getting blanked in back-to-back games on its recent road trip – the first time that has happened to the Bruins since March 17 and 20, 2007.

Toronto Maple Leafs – Online NHL Hockey Matches,

Phil Kessel’s(notes) return to the ice can’t come soon enough for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The 22-year-old star could make his much-anticipated Toronto debut earlier than expected Tuesday night when the struggling Maple Leafs host the Tampa Bay Lightning.

It’s been more than five months since Kessel saw NHL action and two since Toronto (1-7-4) acquired him by sending a pair of first-round picks and a second-rounder to Boston in September. Though it seemed Kessel’s recovery from offseason shoulder surgery would keep him out until around Thanksgiving, he could be ready as early as Tuesday.

According to the Maple Leafs’ official Web site, Kessel skated again Monday, and if cleared by doctors he could return to the ice for the first time since finishing with a career highs of 36 goals and 24 assists last season.

Montreal Canadiens Hockey Live Tonight!

The Montreal Canadiens have thrived in games that have lasted past regulation this season. They’ve rarely needed to put in that type of extra effort to handle the Atlanta Thrashers at home.

Winners of five straight at the Bell Centre, the Canadiens look to continue their success there against the Thrashers on Tuesday night.

Montreal (7-7-0) is undefeated at home since losing its first two, winning its last contest at the Bell Centre 5-4 against Toronto in a shootout Saturday.

Four of the Canadiens’ wins at home and six overall have been in overtime or a shootout.

“Our fans like OT and shootouts I guess,” said winger Michael Cammalleri(notes), who joined Scott Gomez(notes) to score for Montreal in the shootout versus the Maple Leafs.

The Canadiens beat the Thrashers (5-4-1) in a shootout in the teams’ last contest, 2-1 at the Bell Centre on Oct. 20.
