Chicago’s dice roll in dealing Hinrich comes up snake eyes

CHICAGO — It was the right thing to do. It was the right thing to do. It was the right thing to do.
Even though, at the moment, it feels so wrong.
They had to take a shot. They had to take a shot. They had to take a shot.
And so Kirk Hinrich had to take a bullet. As did, to some uncertain degree, the Chicago Bulls’ backcourt in the franchise’s all-in gamble on NBA elite free agents.
ROCKETS GO SHOPPING, IN-HOUSE
HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey went window shopping when the free agent frenzy kicked off. He had coffee with Chris Bosh and pressed his window to the glass on several other big names only to go home without taking the Rockets’ wallet out of his back pocket.
Until now.
The Rockets are in the game now, but doing their work in-house. And when you have solid pieces like Kyle Lowry and Luis Scola to work with, consider it money well spent.
They matched Cleveland’s offer sheet to keep Lowry, at a very reasonable five-years and $23.5 million. And they agreed to a five-year, $47 million deal with Scola, who started all 82 games last season and averaged 16.2 points and 8.6 rebounds — numbers that dwarf those of some several unrestricted free agents that cashed in this summer elsewhere.
LESSONS TO BE LEARNED?
HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – Not everyone in South Florida is ready to roll out the red carpet forLeBron James and serve as the subjects of his new kingdom.
There is at least one voice, drowned out by a sea of others still giddy over the arrival of James (along with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, of course), begging for folks in and around Miami to ease up on the love affair with James.
Dave George of the Palm Beach Post is preaching awareness to Heat fans. He insists they should learn a few lessons about James from the way he exited Cleveland. It’s an interesting message after a solid week of euphoria fueled by the formation of Miami’s Big 3:
As exciting and promising as it is to have The Big Three in Miami, it might be wise to dial back the adoration a bit on The Chosen One. He craves it a little too much. He practically screamed it with a self-indulgent ESPN special centered on his choice of NBA suitors, a TV special that would have turned stomachs in South Florida for its pretentiousness if James had said anything other than “I’m going to take my talents to South Beach.”
Cavs trying to use Shaq to lure Williams
The Cleveland Cavaliers’ pursuit of Hawks swingman Marvin Williams centers at the moment on trying to convince the Hawks to do a sign-and-trade deal that would send Shaquille O’Neal to Atlanta, according to a league source.
The Hawks do have an interest in the 38-year-old O’Neal, who is not likely to return to Cleveland next season. But Atlanta has budget limitations after agreeing to give guard Joe Johnson a $124 million max contract, with ownership unlikely to approve a deal for O’Neal or any other backup center that goes much above the veteran minimum. The Hawks are also interested in free agent center Brad Miller and Bucks free agent center Kurt Thomas.
Chris Bosh, a team centerpiece of a different kind

Chris Bosh, a team centerpiece of a different kind
Chris Bosh, for most of his seven seasons with the Toronto Raptors, was an individual star and a team meh.
His All-Star selections (five) trumped his postseason appearances (two). His stats — 20.2 points per game, 9.4 rebounds overall, the past two seasons as a 20-10 guy — had a lot greater impact on the eyes than on the court, considering the Raptors were a cumulative 66 games under .500 during the Bosh "era," with only one winning season and three victories in 11 playoff games.
