Tim Tebow, Brady Quinn could benefit
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Kyle Orton swears he never saw the arrivals of Brady Quinn and Tim Tebow as a sign of disrespect from the Denver Broncos, only another challenge to embrace.
"I think that's the case for 26, 27 teams in the NFL. They're always trying to replace the quarterback," Orton said Friday, about 15 hours after signing a one-year extension that shows how strong his hold is on the starting job.
"That's just life in this league, life at this position. They're going to try to bring in somebody better and younger and all that stuff," Orton said. "But ultimately, as long as the decision is made on the field and based on play, you really can't have any gripes about it. Fortunately, that's been the case and I've played well."
Brian Cushing’s suspension stands
METAIRIE, La. — Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing had his four-game suspension for taking a performance-enhancing drug upheld by the NFL on Thursday, which means he won't be eligible to play until October.
The reigning Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year was suspended in May for testing positive for HCG, a fertility drug that is on the NFL's banned substances list. Cushing claims that he has a unique medical condition that triggered the positive test.
"At the request of Texans owner Bob McNair, commissioner [Roger] Goodell reviewed additional medical information presented on behalf of Brian Cushing," the NFL said in a statement.
Giants add lineman Shawn Andrews
ALBANY, N.Y. — After spending the last 10 months in Los Angeles rehabbing his back, Shawn Andrews is ready to return to the football field.
The former Eagles Pro Bowl offensive lineman signed with the New York Giants in the early morning hours on Friday and promises to give everything he has in what he called his final run at playing in the NFL.
Andrews, 27, signed a six-year "prove it" deal with a lot of consideration in the second year according to his agent, Rich Moran.
"I'm laying it all on the line," Andrews said after watching his first Giants practice. "Not that I haven't before but this is it. The Giants are going to get everything from me."
"The back is feeling pretty good," added Andrews, who had surgery on his back last December. "I've been working hard. Going hard. Not that I never worked hard in my life but this is my last attempt at it. I'm going all out. I'm selling out right now."
Dez Bryant would shake GM’s hand
OXNARD, Calif. — Dallas Cowboys rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant said that if he had the chance, he would welcome Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland and coach Tony Sparano with open arms.
It was Ireland who sparked a national debate by asking Bryant if his mother was a prostitute during a pre-draft meeting. Bryant told Ireland no, and the general manager quickly apologized for the question many considered inappropriate.
Bryant is trying to return from a right high-ankle sprain suffered during a July 30 practice. There's a chance he might play in the final preseason game on Sept. 2 against the Dolphins.
But Bryant said he is not motivated by the possibility of facing the Dolphins.
Eli Manning exits with gash to forehead
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning said he is fine after suffering a 3-inch laceration on his head and needing 12 stitches, the result of a second-quarter hit on Monday night.
On third-and-1 at the Jets' 5-yard line with 11:03 remaining in the second quarter, Manning dropped back to pass on a running play and ran into Brandon Jacobs before getting drilled in the back by New York Jets linebacker Calvin Pace.
With his helmet flying off, Manning fell forward and hit Jets safety Jim Leonhard's facemask. Manning got up before staggering to his knee as blood trickled down his face from his forehead.
